Here’s a little story about a boy and his dog, who get stuck on a word

On a grey day, Jon and his dog, Dog, went to the library.
Jon searched the shelves and pulled down one of his favourite books.
He and Dog jumped straight in.

They swam with whales for half an hour, till a book about dinosaurs caught Jon’s eye.

Then he saw a book about space.

Whilst floating about, he spotted a book about pirates doing piratey things in a piratey place.

Jon and Dog rushed through the pages, hurrying to get to the good bit…when…Jon got caught.
He couldn’t go on with the rest of the book. Something had a hold of him. A wave crashed over him and he started to panic.
Jon and Dog thought and thought, struggled and struggled but the word wouldn’t let them go.

Suddenly, a voice from outside of the story called to them.
“Jon, are you okay? You look worried.” It was the librarian.
“What does this word mean, please?” Jon pointed to it on the page.
“Oh, that’s a great word,” said the librarian. “That word is barnacle. It’s an arthropod, here’s a book about sea creatures to help.” The librarian handed them a book and showed Jon and Dog a page about limpets and barnacles.

“Thank you,” said Jon. “Wag,” said Dog.
Jon and Dog packed up their books, used their library cards to check them out at the front desk and went home to finish their story about the piratey pirates doing piratey things in a piratey place.
