Wandering and Pondering – Nighttime stroll

The dog and I enjoy a late night stroll.

She likes to catch up on the correspondence of the day, sniffing every pillar and post, and I like to look at the sky.

I use our nighttime wandering to ponder about tomorrows and yesterdays. It is a time for me to say good night to the day and say hello to the stars. I dream about what the next day will bring. For some reason I find it easier to dream bigger in the dark.

I am always on the look out for one set of stars in particular. Orion and his faithful companion Sirius. They don’t shine over my part of the world for the whole year. When they are away I think of them on their grand journey through the universe. When they are here, I think about the friendships that they have seen, friendships like mine with my dog, as they have lived their incredibly long lives. They have witnessed so much.

I look at the moon. It isn’t at its brightest or fullest tonight.

I ask my dog the same question that I’ve asked her so many times, a question about the craters and pockmarks on the surface of the moon.

“Do they look like paw prints to you?”

She is yet to answer.

  1. Such a beautiful night stroll ! And paw prints on the moon, what a lovely thought ! As I’m an “older” lady, I don’t feel safe to go on a night stroll, but in Autumn and Winter, it’s still dark, when we go for a morning stroll, so I can see the stars and the moon !
