I’ve read a fair few non-fiction books about dogs recently. They are full of the facts (as we know them), the provable, the physical evidence of how the relationship developed between us and dogs, how Fido went from wolfish to corgi/labrador/Airedale.
I’ve loved all of the books but I’m always wanting a bit more.
It feels to me that so much of this unlikely bond, between humans and dogs, falls between the lines. So much of it is felt, not provable. So much of this historic friendship, a friendship that has changed the two species involved over the tens of thousands of years that we’ve been walking together, is in the hearts of those people who share their lives with dogs.
